What is açaí? Origin, taste and why the berry is so special
Açaí Guide · Basics · 5 min read · 16 August 2026
Açaí (say "ah-sah-EE") is the fruit of a palm from the Amazon. We explain where it comes from, what it tastes like and how it turns into a bowl.

A berry from the Amazon
Açaí is the small, deep-purple fruit of the açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea), which grows mainly in the Brazilian Amazon. The berries hang in dense clusters on palms up to 25 metres tall and have been eaten there for centuries – long before the bowl became a breakfast trend in California and later in Europe.
For export, the pulp is puréed and deep-frozen straight after harvest, because fresh açaí spoils within 24 hours. That is why açaí in Europe never comes "fresh from the tree" but as a frozen purée – which keeps its flavour and nutritional profile intact.
What does açaí taste like?
Anyone trying pure açaí for the first time is often surprised: the berry isn't sweet but tart, slightly earthy, with hints of dark chocolate and blueberry. That's exactly what makes it so easy to combine – banana adds creaminess and sweetness, strawberry and mango add freshness, granola brings the crunch.
At PALMZ we sweeten our açaí base with nothing more than a little agave syrup; our porridge has no added sugar at all. How sweet your bowl ends up is down to the toppings you choose.
What's in the berry?
Açaí is known for its high content of anthocyanins – the plant pigments that also give blueberries and red cabbage their colour and count among the antioxidants. The berry also contains unsaturated fatty acids (similar to olive oil), fibre and little fruit sugar.
To keep things in perspective: açaí is a natural food, not a miracle cure. As part of a varied diet, a bowl with fresh fruit, nuts and seeds is a filling, plant-based meal – no more and no less.
From berry to bowl
An açaí bowl is a thick, cold açaí cream – colder and creamier than a smoothie – with layers and toppings: granola or chia pudding, fresh fruit, nut butter, coconut chips, seeds.
You can try it in our stores in Haidhausen (Max-Weber-Platz) and Maxvorstadt (Theresienstraße) – as a Signature Bowl or Build Your Own, entirely to your taste.
FAQ
How do you pronounce açaí?
"Ah-sah-EE" – with the stress on the final i. The ç in Portuguese is pronounced like a sharp s.
Is açaí sweet?
No. On its own, açaí is rather tart, slightly earthy, with a note of dark berries and cocoa. The sweetness in a bowl comes from banana, fruit or a little agave syrup.
Is açaí vegan?
Yes. Açaí purée is made from the pulp of the berry; our bowls are entirely plant-based.
